Tomie dePaola inspired – the house shape in particular. I once got to see some of his originals at the Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota that were breathtaking.

Hopkins Library Art Show

I have a veritable smorgasbord of prints on display in the children’s section of the Hopkins Library in Hopkins, Minnesota from now through mid-December – stop by and check them out! GO SEE IT.*

There it is. Just sitting there. Look at it.

It’s fun for me to get my box o’ art out for taking to a new show – looking at it reminds me that, gosh, I kind of like the stuff I draw:) Nothing like a frame to spiff things up. It’s also kind of scary to be set loose with aforementioned box of art in one of my favorite public libraries, with kids gurgling nearby and people actually looking for books right by my display shelf. Don’t mind me! Just setting up my life’s blood on this bookshelf here and walking away. All in a day’s work for CAPTAIN CARMEN. *GO SEE IT. IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE, STOP YOUR HEART, AND REMIND YOU OF YOUR CHILDHOOD. I WOULDN’T MISS IT IF I WERE YOU. Actually, it’s not that exciting. But it’s actually kind of exciting. GO SEE IT.

New Moon Girls Illustrations

Check out some of my art in the September/October issue of the awesome magazine New Moon Girls, which can be found at bookstores and newsstands through November 1st. See page 8! I laughed when I heard what article I would be illustrating. P.S. If you know a girl between ages 8 and 15, this magazine is a great resource, and a subscription would make a great gift! Me and my friends grew up reading New Moon.

I modeled the girl’s outfit on one of my favorites when I was 11 or so: jean capris with roses on them and blue velvet ribbon on the cuffs. Num.

Panda Partay

Here is a collection of cards and drawings I’ve given my sister over the years. Her name is Katharine but she answers to a variety of obscure and unrelated nicknames, including Chinn, Chinn Bear, Chinn B., Beeks, Bikkhu, etc, etc (I picked up Bikkhu in a religious studies class. The Buddha called his disciples ‘bikkhus.’ Naturally, I now call my favorite disciple Bikkhu.) Oh, and she likes pandas…

My sister’s fiance, Milo: “That panda looks like a futon!” He said it in a sassy way.
I'm sorry this one is so creepy.

This one is lasering some poop. Thanks to my bf for that addition. Nothing like lasered poop to really add to the birthday feel.

A jolly pink unicorn to finish! Ta!
And a jolly pink unicorn to finish! hohoho.

Somewhere I actually have a small, rhyming, illustrated book by myself titled “Panda Partay.” Don’t worry, when I find it I’ll show it to you.
